The Coolness Factor

When we think of the famous punk rock band The Sex Pistols, who do we automatically think of? Not the lead singer Johnny Rotten. We think of Sid Vicious. Famously known for being in the band and killing his longtime girlfriend Nancy, Sid Vicious has always been the face of punk. The interesting thing is he was not that good of a musican. Although people think him to be  (who dont know the band very well) the lead singer, he was the bassist. He was not a very good bassist. Steve Jones, lead guitarist, is quoted saying how he recorded some of the bass parts in Never Mind the Bollocks. So why did this not very good musician become the face of this english punk rock band. The answer? his look. He was more punk then anyone in the band. He had spiky hair, wore shirts with swastikas on them if choosing to wear a shirt at all, and he had tattoos. He looked off-putting but intriguing at the same time. He was the coolness factor for the band. Even though he wasn’t a good musician, he had the cool image that the band needed to be successful.
